Who is SCX
SCX is the brand which Tecnitoys Juguetes SA (a company based in Barcelona Spain) uses to sell its products in most countries of the world. In Spain, Mexico, Russia and a few other countries, Tecnitoys uses another brand. Tecnitoys was established in 1997 to acquire the SCX slot car product line from Tyco. In 1993, the principal owners of Tecnitoys had sold these assets to Tyco during a time when Tyco was buying up as many toy manufacturers as they could get their hands on. All the way back to 1962, the primary owners of Tecnitoys ran a company called Exin, which had developed slot car products in Spain, making them one of the most sought-after toys in the Spanish market. The SCX brand was introduced in 1991 when company products were first sold in Portugal. SCX was introduced to North America in the late 1990s through a partnership with Irwin Toys in Toronto, Canada. At that time Irwin would buy all accessories in bulk from our factories in China and assemble sets, as well as car and track accessories in their Canadian warehouse. In 2001, SCX began selling to distributors in North America directly from China (pre assembled). The introduction of SCX in most other countries of the world began during the past 10 years.
History
Slot Cars, largely as we know them today, were invented during the mid–1950s in England as various people started tinkering with how to electrify keyless clockwork tinplate automobile models.Eventually, it was determined that with pins under the car to keep the vehicle moving along a slot, the car could be controlled better – and raced.B. F. Francis, an English engineer who owned a company called Minimodels Ltd. decided in 1957 to add a small electric motor to produce "slot cars" based on the design of his Scalex tinplate cars from the early 1950s.
In 1958, Minimodels Ltd. was acquired by Lines Bros. (Tri–ang), who brought greater capital to expand the line of products. In 1960, the production of tinplate cars stopped as the company embraced production in plastic.
In 1961, slot cars caught the eye of Josep Maria Arnau, an entrepreneur from Barcelona, Spain and soon Lines Brothers Group entered into an agreement with Mr. Arnau′s company, Exin, under which Exin would commercialize slot cars in Spain. In 1962, Slot Cars were introduced at the International Toy Show in Barcelona, Spain and quickly because a sought–after toy for Spanish children.Between 1962 and 1965, most product sold in Spain was imported from England via somewhat porous borders, since under the dictatorship of Franco it was illegal to import large quantities of toys into Spain.
During the 1960s, Exin began producing track and transformers in Spain and then individual cars, so that by 1966, they were able to manufacture entire sets for domestic sale. The relationship between Lines Bros. and Exin went on into the 1970s when it terminated for various reasons, after which both companies continued to develop their products under separate brands in their respective countries.
Over the years since founding of the company, SCX has produced tens of thousands of slot cars. A visual history of this can be found at the archive site Neldo.net.
